Centres and Research Activities
The quality of research produced within the department of history is of the highest calibre. All members are research-active; with one exception, all are involved in supervising research students at masters and doctoral level.

The research strengths at UL lie in early modern Ireland, Spain and medieval and Renaissance Italy, nineteenth-century Ireland, Australia, twentieth-century international (Irish-American relations), and Germany. Within these periods, particular strengths can be found in the history of education, nationalism, women and gender, Renaissance iconography, early modern court culture, politics, and warfare; urban history; and the American presidency. In general accord with the arts and humanities, research is mostly independently based. Nonetheless, individual faculty are also involved in collaborative projects with colleagues in universities both within the state and the EU.
